Recording from Region III Conference

Hello all,

Here is the recording from the SCI Region III Conference. Thanks to Hannah Shoemaker for performing on Double Bass and Seung-Hye Kim for performing on piano! Now there are three versions of Simulacrum, each with different instrumentation. I wonder what the fourth will be? (I really hope a bassoonist is reading this...) Anyway, the conference was a blast. I met many composers from all over, heard lots of interesting music, and wound up learning a few valuable lessons along the way.

1. Have a business card. Lots of people had them for their composition work. I did not. It's kind of embarrassing to have to borrow a shred of paper to write your website down for someone after they've given you a professional looking card.

2. Always bring a recording device to the concert. You never know when the powers that be will decide to not record the concert without telling you. Good thing I learned about it early. I had time to make an emergency trip to Best Buy and pick something up. Talk about a very close call.

3. Just because a hotel is cheap and the pictures online are nice, don't stay there if they have a "No Refunds" sign on the front desk. I'm reasonably sure we stayed at the sketchiest hotel I've ever been to. We're talking roaches, missing/nonfunctional appliances, weird stains everywhere (even in the halls), and suspicious smells. Well, at least there were no bedbugs, but that was about the only thing this joint had going for it. The real spit in the eye on this one was that the website promised free breakfast, but when we inquired about it at the front desk their response was that they had stopped doing that six months ago. Oh well, thank God for McDonald's.

Thanks again to everyone who made the conference possible. I am most certainly looking forward to the next one, wherever it may be. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to attend one if you have the chance. Who knows what you may learn?
